Punish many for the few?

Punish many for the few?

PTA meeting today... It was discussed that there are too many times they are asking for money, be it this sale, that sale or another fundraiser, so they want to cut back. They said they are cutting the Valentine's Day, Mother's Day and Father's Day sale.

Valentine's Day is just a bunch of 'stuff' they say, so we can do without that. Well, I like the stuff and it's my birthday!

Mother's Day, well, not all the kids have mothers or grandmothers, so we have to be sensitive to that.

Father's Day - same issue as Mother's Day.

They are still going to have a plant sale, but not call it Mother's Day plant sale. Yes, it is sad if a child doesn't have a mom AND dad, be it by choice or whatever. MOST kids have both parents though and I know mine love the sales. I remember when I was a kid, I would love buying some "thing" for my parents for their special day.

It was also brought up that some kids just don't have the money to keep bringing in. We understand that and I have to tell you, after working these things for so many years, I know dang well we usually put out our own money for the kid to be able to get something for mom/dad/whomever.

A friend of mine did a great job voicing my thoughts (which were hers too lol) and it will be discussed further in an executive meeting. We'll see what happens!

PTA fundraising rules

Postby MinnieFreem » Fri Jun 08, 2007 8:14 pm

Quick question! Does your PTA set a goal for what they want to do with money fundraised? Or do they just go and rake the money in and then figure out what to do with it?

Cause it's supposed to be the first way! Goal set, fundraise only towards that specific goal. Like, we want to raise money to help pay for a bench outside the school. A fundraiser is set up to get the amount needed only. No more.

Also, PTA's are only supposed to carry-over enough money to the next year to help them get started in September. Shouldn't have thousands of dollars stashed away!

Just curious. We have this problem every few years when one of our units decides they're going to do whatever they want and not follow the rules set by Nat'l and State PTA. You can get in big trouble!

These sales that are being eliminated are not fundraisers - they are break evens :) Just a venue for the kids to get 'stuff' for whomever.

We have other big fundraisers that do well and we don't specifically have a fundraising budget. At the end of the year the PTA takes over the school for a fun day of activities with the kids. If we have lots of money, we can spend more on that event, if we have less money, we have to be more frugal with that event.

I know the presidents that have been in the position while I've been in the school are VERY particular about following guidelines!
